LEAD ORGANIZATION :

Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit is the lead organization in this prevention services initiative for youth in collaboration with three local community based organizations: ACCESS ( Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services), LFS (Latino Family Services), and AFG (Alternative for Girls).

The Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit (GSMD) was founded in 1923 and is the seventh largest council out of 313 Girl Scout Councils nationwide. GSMD has sixty-five full-time employees with an annual budget of $7,272,031. As of 2005, GSMD served over 31,000 girls ages 5-17, with the help of approximately 13,000 adult volunteers who form the heart and soul of any successful Girl Scout operation. While providing traditional troop and camp programming to over 20,000 suburban girls, GSMD provides Girl Scouting programs through after-school academic assistance, conflict resolution, life skills and cultural and healthy-living learning opportunities to an additional 10,000 underserved girls from economically challenged families and communities in and around Detroit.

The mission of the Girl Scouts is to ‘build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.’ GSMD embodies this mission by providing programs and experiences to girls that offer opportunities to learn how to plan, utilize decision-making and leadership skills, build self-confidence and self-esteem and to make contribution through the provision of community service.

AGENCY PARTNERS

ACCESS ( Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services)

Founded in 1971, ACCESS is a human services organization primarily committed to the development of the Arab-American community in all aspects of its economic and cultural life. To support this goal, ACCESS provides a wide range of human and cultural services as well as advocacy work. In recent years, it has expanded and diversified its services to other immigrant communities beyond Arab-Americans. ACCESS serves to meet the needs of low income families and help newly arrived immigrants adapt to life in America. Its programs encompass issues/areas such as arts and culture, employment and training, youth education, community health and research for the insured and uninsured, mental health, social services as well as the environment.

LFS (Latino Family Services)

This community agency has been serving the primary area of Southwest Detroit for over twenty-five years. It provides services to developmentally disabled persons, families, youth, seniors, and persons with AIDS. The primary goal of this agency is to develop a service system which assists and supports families in their efforts to improve their social, health and educational functioning; enhance their community environment; and increase economic self-sufficiency. This is accomplished by providing bilingual, culturally competent health and human resources and collaborating with other partners and services providers to improve outcomes for children and families. Programs and activities offered through this agency fall under three main areas: 1) Clinical Services (Developmental Disability Case Management, Domestic Violence, and Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment); 2) Prevention Program (HIV/AIDS, Parenting Program, Senior's Program, and Youth Program); and 3) Adult Education (GED and Instruction of English as a Second Language).

AFG (Alternative for Girls)

Located in Southwest Detroit since 1987, AFG is a community-based organization that has served girls and young women from this culturally diverse disadvantaged area with vocational guidance, educational support, and counseling. AFG's goal is to help homeless and high-risk girls and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy, and exploitation, and to help them explore and access support, resources and opportunities necessary to make positive choices and lead safe, happy, healthy and successful lives
