The intent of this program is to offer students the opportunity to spend six weeks serving in community agencies such as hospitals, nursing, homes, health care centers, and other social agencies in Morelia, Mexico. With the grant secured from Michigan Campus Compact, Dr. Elvia R. krajewski - Jaime, Professor of Social Work Director of the Center for Community Building and Civic Engagement has led for the past three years several groups of faculty and students in travel in Mexico. This is a six-week cultural immersion program entitled "Community Practice in Mexico".
The students arrive in Mexico city and stay for a long weekend. Then they travel approximately four hours west into the beautiful mountainous central highlands of Mexico where Morelia is located. Students stay with Mexican families and visit other cultural sites such as Patzcuaro, Janitzio, and Guanajuato. The academic highlights of the program include an intensive Spanish course taught at Universidad Latina de America (UNLA), and various seminars and workshops taught by faculty from UNLA and EMU.
The Mexico Program is sponsored by the center for Community Building and Civic Engagement, the World College, Academic Programs abroad, the College of Health and human Services, and the School of Social Work.
GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
The goal of the 'Community Practice in Mexico Program' is to strengthen intercultural understanding and professional cultural competence by offering students and faculty the opportunity to do professional practice in community organizations in Mexico.
