One of the major efforts in the Center for Community Building and Civic Engagement was its Community Leadership Fellows program. This program, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, was designed to partner community leaders with university faculty,to work in projects that prevent and reduce juvenile crime and voilence.The target populations for the program include the City of Ypsilanti, MIchigan; the Latino community of Southwest Detroit; the African American community in Detroit; and the Arab American community of Dearborn, Michigan.
GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
- Develop Programs to Address the Prevention of Youth Conflict, Crime, and Violence.
- Build Organizational Capacity to Respond to Community Needs.
- Develop Specific Culturally Competent Community - Building Strategies.
These goals were accomplished through the Community Leadership Fellows Program that includes two cohorts per year. Each cohort included five faculty members from eastern Michigan, and five fellows from the Ypsilanti, Arab American, and Latino communities. In the two years of the grant, ten community and ten faculty fellows participated in the program.
