PUSH for youths GOALS is a curriculum designed to assist foster parents as primary teachers of youths approaching emancipation from foster care. It is divided into four modules:

Self Help

"Self-Help Skills," 2nd edition, by Patricia Ryan, Ph.D.

This module includes the following topics:

  • Helping Youths Prepare for Emancipation from Foster Care
  • Adolescent Development
  • Understanding the Development of Abused Children
  • Helping Youths Work on Self-Esteem
  • Teaching Youths About the Community

Choices

"Choices and Consequences," 2nd edition, by Patricia Ryan, Ph.D.

This module deals with decision making, interpersonal relationships, sexuality, and stress management skills that young people need.

Employ

"Employability," by Dale Rice, Ph.D

This module deals with the skills necessary to seek and find a job. It includes exercises on career options, training alternatives, and interpersonal relationships.

Home

"Leaving Home Again," by Emily Jean McFadden, M.S.W.

This module explores feelings youths have about their pasts and helps them make sense of their life histories as a basis for a healthy adjustment to leaving foster care.

Each module has an instructor manual, foster parent manual (PUSH) and a youth workbook (GOALS). The foster parent manual is packaged in a folder with a copy of the youth workbook. PUSH is designed to be used as part of a foster parent learning experience. Participants will need a copy of the youth workbook to keep track of what they are learning in class and to make notes on how they want to motivate the youths in their homes to work on the exercises in GOALS. Each youth should be given his or her own GOALS workbook in which to complete the exercises and to keep for later reference.

The instructor manual contains all of the materials in the foster parent packet plus additional material just for the instructor: General Procedures and Techniques, an Instructor's Guide at the beginning of each session, and an outline or brief summary of answers to the discussion questions. The instructor manuals are packaged in sets containing all four modules.
